Anna Tyberg
Update on Anna Tyberg (deTombe) family within the Tribe of Othelia, 2025
Pieter and I moved to St. Albans, near London, in 2017. Pieter worked at Harefield hospital. I and we did a lot of sight-seeing and welcomed many friends and family from the States. Two years later we moved to Montpellier, France. This was always the plan for Pieter’s retirement, but he hasn’t quite retired yet. In fact, we spend a portion of the year in Florence, where he continues to work as well.
We try to come back once a year to see family, both in the States and in Holland. But family and friends come to us, or to other places in Europe where we visit them.
Philip deTombe
After high school, Philip continued studying in Amsterdam and Ulster. After a few years moving around, he ended up in Oxford with his girlfriend, Faye Jones, who was studying to become a HS teacher. He went on to do the same and now they both teach HS (history for him and English for her) in Manchester. They are not far away so we see them regularly.
Jack deTombe
Jack studied piano on and off at Idaho State University in Pocatello until he finished his degree last year. For two years he has been working as an accompanist and pianist in Bozeman but now plans to join us in Montpellier and do a master’s.
My thoughts about being a part of this family echo those of many of “the cousins.” Christmas Eve, music, and hospitality are what I love about my memories and they have been important influences on my own family.
I introduced Pieter to the clan at the 1986 Christmas Eve celebration. Pieter, his friend Eef and I drove two days both ways, to Cambridge and Grantsburg. Even though Grandma (Othelia) and Aunt Annie quite clearly preferred Pieter’s friend, for his Nordic looks, I think, Pieter had a wonderful first impression of being unconditionally welcomed. The sled that Maurice made for each of us is among my favorite ornaments.
So, an update.
Pieter and I live in Oak Park, Illinois. Pieter is a researcher at the Stritch School of Medicine at Loyola University. In this capacity he travels considerably and I’m very happy to be able to accompany him now that our sons are on their own. I continue to play the cello in my community orchestra and Pieter enjoys taking photographs when we travel.
Philip, 23, graduated from Loyola with a degree in history and philosophy in May 2015, and is currently finishing a masters in genocide and holocaust studies at the University of Amsterdam. He lives in the nearby lovely city of Haarlem, rides a bike, and plays cello in the local community orchestra. Hopefully I will have an update on his future soon as he is busy applying for jobs!
Jack, 21, is almost a junior at Idaho State University in Pocatello. He is a piano performance major but seems headed towards a career in jazz. He now appreciates the never-ending Oscar Peterson dinner music of his childhood.
